How to Choose a Meaningful Engagement Session Location

Your engagement session isn’t just about pretty photos—it’s about capturing a piece of your story. When couples ask me, “Where should we take our engagement pictures?” I always start with this: choose a location that feels like you.

Whether you're drawn to coastal views, redwood trails, or the energy of a vibrant downtown, the right spot will make your session feel authentic—and more fun.

Here are a few tips to help you pick a location that actually means something to you as a couple:

1. Think About Places With Personal Significance

Did you have your first date at a park? Spend weekends hiking the same trail? Pop the question in front of a local landmark? These memories are a great foundation for meaningful engagement photos. Even if the location seems simple or casual, those shared experiences make it special.

Pro tip: If the place is a little too busy or doesn’t allow photography, we can often find a nearby alternative that still connects to your story.

2. Consider Your Vibe

Ask yourselves:

  • Do you want something outdoorsy or urban?

  • Rustic and romantic, or modern and bold?

  • Are you imagining jeans and boots—or a flowing dress and button-up?

Your outfits, energy, and personality should align with the environment. A couple who loves exploring the city might feel more themselves in downtown San Jose than on a cliffside at sunset (though we can do both, too!).

3. Use the Engagement Map for Inspiration

Last week, I shared a curated map of engagement photo spots around the Bay Area. It includes beaches, gardens, architecture, parks, and more—each one with unique scenery and lighting.

If you’re not sure what fits your style, that’s a great place to start. You can view the map here: 👉 View the Engagement Location Map

Spend a few minutes exploring. You might discover a new spot that feels just right.

4. Don't Stress About "Epic" – Focus on You

You don’t need a sweeping mountain vista or an elaborate setup. The best photos come from how you interact with each other—not from a postcard-perfect background. The location should be the setting, not the star.

What matters most is that you're comfortable, connected, and present together.

5. Let’s Talk It Through

Still unsure where to go? I’ve photographed in a lot of local spots and can guide you based on your style, schedule, and comfort level. Whether you want something close to home or are up for a short drive, we’ll find a backdrop that brings out your best.

Wrapping Up

Your engagement session is the start of your wedding story—and it should reflect who you are as a couple. Choosing the right location helps tell that story in a way that’s natural, timeless, and completely yours.

When you're ready to book or brainstorm ideas, just reach out. I'd love to help you find the perfec
